Afterpay Day is coming: what’s worth holding for

The late-August promo weekend is real but modest. Here’s what to hold a week for — and what not to wait on.

Afterpay Day usually runs Thursday–Sunday in late August (our prediction: around the 20th–23rd; Afterpay confirms officially only shortly beforehand). It’s a genuine promo event across hundreds of Australian retailers — but it’s a mid-weight one. Calibrate accordingly.

Worth holding a week for

  • Headphones and earbuds — audio brands participate reliably; see the fair-price band so you can judge the promo honestly.
  • Small kitchen appliances — solid mid-range discounting, especially on last season’s colours and models.
  • Fashion-adjacent and fitness gear — historically the event’s heartland.

Don’t bother holding

  • TVs and big-ticket electronics — the November window is deeper. If the TV works, wait for Black Friday.
  • Heaters and winter goods — their clearance window starts in September regardless of any branded event.
  • Anything you need this week — a modest maybe-discount isn’t worth a fortnight of cold showers. Buy it.

One honesty note: you don’t need to use Afterpay to shop the event — the discounts are storewide at participating retailers. Buy-now-pay-later is a payment choice with its own costs; the calendar advice stands either way.
